INTEGRATED TRACTION CONTROL

AND

BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Integrated Traction Control & Battery Management System performs the Control and monitoring of the locomotive power system in both Running mode (Traction and Electric Braking, recovering the corresponding energy back to the Battery) and Battery Charging mode from 3 x 400V socket via the Traction Motor windings and the Traction & Charging Converter.

The BMS (Battery Management System) consists of the Central BMS , 16 Local BMS microcontrollers in each Pack and the Charge Redistribution Devices (mounted across each Cell), providing the comprehensive features of the storage Battery with the following main tasks:

• Control of both Running and Charging mode so that any Cell does not exceed the allowed values of the operating temperature range;• Control of the Running mode so that any Cell does not drop below the minimum permitted voltage in the entire range of operating temperatures;
• Control of the Charging mode so that any Cell does not rise above the highest allowed voltage in the entire range of operating temperatures;
• Control of the Running mode so that any Cell does not drop below the minimum allowed State Of Charge (SOC) voltage in the entire range of operating temperatures by mean of limiting the DOD (Depth Of Discharge);
• Display of the SOC in both Running mode and Charging mode, with SOC recalibration in the final stage of the Charging mode;
• Measuring and Recording the internal resistance of the Cells;
• Balancing the SOC of the Cells by mean of active redistribution of the charge between the Cells in order to maximize the amount of energy stored in Battery (capacity self maintenance along the lifetime of the Battery).
• Balancing the SOC of the Packs by mean of active redistribution of Packs in order to maximize the amount of energy stored in the traction Battery (capacity self maintenance along the lifetime of the Battery).
