The Traction/Charging Converter has a double function:
- In the running mode, feeds the traction motor with variable voltage
and frequency providing the running mode at the controlled torque
and regenerative electric braking mode with the fully energy recovering
back to the batteries. In this mode, the traction motor has stator
windings connected in star by an outside contactor (operating as
asynchronous motor with the short circuit rotor).
- In the batteries charging mode, the contacts of the outside contactor
are opened and thus the Traction/Charging Converter is powered by
three-phase network 3 x 400 V by means of the 3 statoric windings
of the traction motor and converts this voltage in DC voltage that
adapts to the charging requirements of the batteries (operation as
three-phase network inductivity).
